More of my series of Juneau, AK in miniature. I decided these photograph better when I put them in groups of 4 and do not have to get so close to them. Each one of these is just an every day scene in Juneau. It is a small community and the mountains are in your face no matter where you go. It is such a gorgeous place! And I really love the low winter light. It is wonderful for filming or painting.

These are all the same mountains that surround the Mendenhall glacier, but each from a different part of town. It is almost like you cannot get away from it. These views are everywhere!

Mendenhall Colors

img_2713-640x506 On this foggy morning, I was just struck by the beauty of the layers and the lifting fog. Then when I got closer, to see these beautiful colors just beginning to peak through the fog…what a treat! It is a beautiful place for sure.

Foggy Morning at Mendenhall Glacier

img_2716-512x640 This beautiful place is Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau, AK. I am fortunate to live just within a few miles. My husband and I love to take morning walks here and we were blesses on this particular morning with this spectacular view. I really love how the distant peak is the only area receiving the warmth of the morning sun. This type of contrast of sunlight and shadow is what really inspires me. It is a challenge to capture that light.

Walk to Mendenhall

Another morning walk to Mendenhall Glacier. It is beautiful no matter what the weather. On this morning the fog was just clearing. I liked the warm reds on the peaks contrasted with the deep purple in the shadow from another mountain. And of course the little bits of left over fog are always interesting. This is a 5×7 oil on canvas…mostly meant to be a study of the light effects.

Soft Low Light

This is a view looking down the channel towards Downtown Juneau and the Juneau/Douglas Bridge. I made a stop on the side of the road, probably where one really shouldn’t stop, but I just had to get a few shots of this beautiful scene! One thing that I learned and applied here is to paint the sky and then make extra of that color. Then use that color to blend into the mountains to give you that nice atmospheric look. It is much better than just adding white. It unifies the whole thing much better. I am looking forward to doing this on a larger canvas very soon.

Red Evening Light

The intense pink on the white peaks here shows how red the evening light can be. Everything else around was almost black and white but the light reflecting on the mountain is red. I see this often here in Juneau on the mountains, and I wanted to get it down on canvas so I remember the strength of the color.

Sunny Spot

This is a view from my home. There is a mountain that goes straight up just across from us. The way the sun hits it in the evening amazes me. the colors are so strong. I’m not sure how this reads to someone not familiar with the view. But it is supposed to be a patch of the mountainside just catching the sun between the dense foggy patches.

Sunlit Fog

This is the second little 5×7 study of the warm light effects on a subject. In this case it made a nice backdrop for the interesting foreground. I thought it was interesting that the fog looked so warm compared to the cool, shaded trees. I really wish that we had more sunny days here so I could get outside and paint!
