This was an amazing spot to paint. It may look a bit awkward, but it couldn’t have been much nice. There were not even any bugs to contend with. For some reason, I just like to paint rocks. And I don’t think that I am alone in this.
I am back at painting a new batch of miniatures for this season at the Juneau Artists Gallery. I will probably be doing several posts with them coming up. I did not feel that I would be putting time into doing the small ones this year, but once I did one, I was very motivated to continue. I have done about 20 new ones this past couple weeks, and really enjoying them!
This piece measures 8×24 inch and sold at a recent showing at the Juneau Artists Gallery which I belong to. It is an artists co operative gallery. Sunshine Cove is one of my favorite spots here in Juneau. These little islands are just a little way from shore, but just far enough to give them a wonderful distance to be viewed. The roadside is also quite a bit above sea level, so that also lends to wonderful viewing. And the Chilkat Range of mountains on the far side are just spectacular as a backdrop.
The mountains in Juneau, AK are amazing! I never tire of them. I am always amazed at how many different faces they have depending on the light and weather situation. I enjoy the challenge of painting scenes with subtle variations, and trying to portray a certain lighting effect. These mountains are part of the Chilkat Range.
This was a little piece that I did for a workshop. I really liked the soft atmosphere in this picture. I have not had much practice painting in this type of soft hazy lighting. but I really liked the effect here. It was challenging to stick with the softness and not think I needed to add any hard deep shadows. I think it was successful. It was also an opportunity to practice more bare trees, which was great!
These towers are spectacular and I am fortunate enough to be able to view them from my house. I love how the warm light bathes them in this glowing color. This was also good tree practice.
Sad story though, on the very day I painted this picture we had two young men go missing after reaching the top of the top. They posted a photo on Instagram and never made it back. The rescuers found their ropes and gear but as of yet, they have not located the men. Hopefully when the temps warm up a bit they will be able to find them.
I love doing scenes like this that are very soft and subtle! They are usually challenging but rewarding. This is the Chilkat Mountain range here in Juneau. They are just spectacular, especially when snow-covered. This piece is a 5×7 oil on panel
These are some of the newer miniatures from the end of 2017. I am very pleased with how the minis were received this past year. It was my first year at the Juneau Artists Gallery and it was a very good one. I do not plan to paint as many minis this year but rather focus on quick studies. But I still have more to add here over the next several days. Some of these will be turned into larger paintings. I think the larger photo of the ripples in the sand is one of my favorites. I will definitely be doing this one soon. (each mini is 2.5×3.5)
I’ve been painting miniatures for a Gallery most of the year. Finally I have gotten to the point where I can begin working on some bigger pieces. 8×10 isn’t big, but it is much bigger than the minis. This is one of the wintry paintings I did to use as a Christmas card for this year. It is a view from the road looking toward the Mendenhall Glacier off in the distance. Always a beautiful place to stop for a photo!
