I live in Juneau, Alaska where the inspiration in nature abounds! I love taking photos of this beautiful place and then painting them. In 2013 I left my job in order to devote more time to my artwork. One of the ways I have been learning, is through online tutorials. I have been so encouraged with the amount of information that people share about their artwork. These have been extremely helpful as I have been working at my painting. This year my goal is to paint almost daily and to try to get outdoors more and paint en plein air (or out doors from life). Miniatures

These are some of the newer miniatures from the end of 2017.  I am very pleased with how the minis were received this past year. It was my first year at the Juneau Artists Gallery and it was a very good one.  I do not plan to paint as many minis this year but rather focus on quick studies. But I still have more to add here over the next several days. Some of these will be turned into larger paintings. I think the larger photo of the ripples in the sand is one of my favorites. I will definitely be doing this one soon. (each mini is 2.5×3.5)

AK State series #4

This is the 4th piece in my State series. It is a painting of the path that leads to the Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau. One unique thing about it is that it is an evening light. I don’t usually get to the Glacier in the evening so the lighting here is the opposite of most of my pictures. And I really like the extreme low light effect.

This 8×10 oil painting was done so I could print some Christmas cards from it. It is one of my favorite types of scenes but also the most challenging. I am really looking forward to doing more of these paintings in 2018 and getting outside more to paint from life.

Mendenhall River

I’ve been painting miniatures for a Gallery most of the year. Finally I have gotten to the point where I can begin working on some bigger pieces. 8×10 isn’t big, but it is much bigger than the  minis. This is one of the wintry paintings I did to use as a Christmas card for this year. It is a view from the road looking toward the Mendenhall Glacier off in the distance. Always a beautiful place to stop for a photo!

New Idea

These new paintings are on a nice grade of plywood, each cut out by my husband. They are approximately 12×12 in the body of the state. They will be going to the Juneau Artists Gallery in a few days. I’m excited to see how they will be received.  Do you have a favorite?

Foggy Morning at Mendenhall

This is another 10×8 oil of Mendenhall Glacier. I love this view from a large stream up the road as you approach the Glacier. There is often fog here and sometimes you can only catch a glimpse of the glacier itself, but it is very interesting to me when it is like this. There are always wonderful reflections in the areas of water around the glacier and this is one in particular that I like because of all the dead trees in the water, giving it a nice textural quality. As a note though, I find these trees extremely difficult to paint. I have found them very challenging. So in order to overcome this, I will be painting them quite a lot for practice ( =

Mendenhall Glacier

Mendenhall Glacier has become one of my primary subjects. It is only 3-4 miles from my home and always a beautiful place to take pictures. We have a lot of tourism here in Juneau so it also makes for a perfect painting subject to sell to tourists. Hence, my newest paintings are of the Glacier. This one is from a very clear bright day and very different than most days here. But I really liked this shot. All the colors are quite cool, but I tried to add a few touches of warmth in the green grasses and around the base of the most forward area on the left. I also used Pthalo blue in the Glacier, which is a rich, warm blue. (this is an 8×10 oil)
